A TEENAGER who got a 15-year-old girl pregnant has been spared a jail sentence.

Simon Blakemore, who was 19 when he had sex with the girl, admitted that he knew she was underage.

He pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child at Newcastle Crown Court today.

The court heard that Blakemore, now 20, had sex with the girl on August 8 last year when she was 15.

The allegation came to light when the girl visited the University Hospital of North Durham on October 3 to have a termination.

Tony Davis, prosecuting, said: "He drove her to his home where in his bedroom he locked the door as others were in the house.

"During the course of being behind closed doors it is plain that sexual intecourse did take place."

Ronald Mitchell, mitigating, said: "This was an immature young man and a mature young woman."

Judge David Evans said: "At the time you were 19-years-old and she was three monhs short of her 16th birthday.

"You accept that you should have appreciated that she wasn't 16 and that accodingly it was inappropriate to engage in the act that got her pregnant."

The judge warned that Blakemore could have faced time behind bars but said: "If I were to do so the help you plainly need you not be received."

Blakemore of Peterbrough Road, Newton Hall, Durham was given a nine-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

He must sign the sex offenders register for ten years.

Nine months suspended sentence and TEN years on the sex offenders register for sex with a girl 90 days shy of her 16th birthday? This seems a little harsh to me considering the male involved was only 19?

Sentencing seems too relaxed. He was a responsible adult and should have known better, she was merely a child. Despite the fact she was only 90 days short of her 16th birthday does not make it any more acceptable; had it been one day before would still make it illegal. The age of consent is 16: not a day before that.

I agree the sentencing seems too relaxed. It is clear that the girl was vulnerable and was taken advantage of, he knew that she was underage, therefore should not have even attempted to have had sexual intercourse. He was 19 and knew exactly what he was doing, and by locking the door it shows that he had intensions of having sexual activity with a girl who was not yet 16.

What a difference a day makes..?

Girl is 15 years 364 days old.. Sentence is ten years on the sex offenders register.

Girl is a day older, nothing!

Seems to me to devalue the sex offenders register, which you presume is filled with pedophiles and rapists.

In the past you could look at a driver with points for speeding as being unsafe.. Now that 31mph in a 30mph gets you a ticket via a camera, speeders are more common and less stigma is attached to having points for it.

Will the SOR go the same way?

This girl was NOT raped, and despite the guy 'locking the door', it doesn't PROVE only he wanted to have sex with her, or that she was NOT willing.

Wrong - She was underage to legally consent to sex, that means she was raped

It amazes me, after browsing this website how people who have been caught speeding get a jail sentence, yet someone who has clearly admitted to having unconsentual sex with a minor, is not sentenced to prison.

In my opinion, he was in the wrong as a responsible adult he should not of took advantage of a young girl, especially not locking the door for ''privacy''. If this was the case he clearly knew what his intentions were and after knowing the girl for several years he clearly knew how old she was. There is no excuse for committing this sexual offence.

However I agree with the judge, that if he had gone to prison he would not have got the help you clearly needed. I think his punishment is enough for society, although not for the girl, I think for her, it will never be enough as what he has put her and her family through it dreadful. 10 years on the sex offenders list is along time however knowing that you are a rapist and living with that is punishment enough.
