A FOUR-year-old boy is in hospital with serious head injuries after being struck by a car this afternoon.

The youngster was using a pedestrian crossing on King Street, in Spennymoor, County Durham, when he was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa.

He was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham with head injuries, a fractured right ankle and left thigh.

The injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.

Another boy who was crossing the road with the victim, who is from the town, was unhurt.

The driver of the Corsa, a local woman in her late teens, stopped at the scene.

Police closed the road from the time of the incident, 3.45pm, until around 5.15pm.

Witnesses are asked to call Durham Constabulary's accident unit on 0191-3752159 or 0845-6060365.
