STRIKE action at airports in Norway has led to the cancellation of a brand new North-East service.

The daily Eastern Airways service from Newcastle International Airport to Stavanger Sola Airport, which is aimed mainly at the business market, only launched last week.

But Tuesday's flights were cancelled after fire, rescue and security staff at 12 Norwegian airports, including Stavanger, went on strike in a row over pay.

The 9.50am outbound and 2pm inbound Eastern Airways flights have both been axed and refunds offered to affected passengers.

Eastern Airways spokesman Darren Roberts said the airline had been left with no alternative, but to cancel the service.

He said: "Passengers booked on any cancelled flights will be offered a refund or rebooked to travel on an alternative date.

"These circumstances are completely beyond our control and we hope Stavanger Airport's operator, Avinor, is able to resolve the situation quickly."

Ove Narvesen, director of public affairs and communication at Avinor, said they regretted the consequences passengers and airlines were facing.

Mr Narvesen said he did not know when talks between employers and representatives of those out on strike would be resumed.

The strike began on Friday and has hit some of Norways biggest airports.

North-East passengers should visit www.easternairways.com for the latest information.
