CHILDREN from Grangetown Primary School will be planting a number of trees to help brighten up the area.
The pupils will be get their hands dirty planting four flowering cherry trees and two pear trees as part of Redcar and Cleveland Council’s National Tree Week celebrations.
Teacher Heather Bentley is taking the 12 youngsters, aged seven-11, to nearby Victoria Park today (MON) to complete the planting, hoping it can improve the area’s chances of gaining Northumbria In Bloom recognition next year.
Community group, the Future Regeneration of Grangetown, already caught the judges’ eyes this summer with a tour of the area, showing the environmental improvements.
Coun Sylvia Szintai, the Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: "This summer, the In Bloom judges told us that they felt the park was litter-free and well-maintained, now we want to add a bit more brightness and colour and hope to impress them again."
The trees will form an attractive entrance to the park off Bolckow Road, lining each side of the path.
