A MEMORIAL woodland has been officially opened with a tree planting ceremony.
An area within Newham Grange Park in Stockton has been transformed into "Butterwick Wood", named after the Teesside hospice, where people can celebrate a special event or remember a loved one.
The first tree was jointly planted by the Mayor of Stockton, councillor John Fletcher, and hospice founder, Mary Butterwick, on Thursday.
About 80 varieties which had already been dedicated were dug into the ground including oak, ash, maple, cherry, rowan and birch.
Trees costing £20 each can be planted by Stockton council gardeners or by members of the public on designated days.
Councillor Mary Womphrey, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "Not only is this a wonderful and long-lasting way to remember a special event or a loved one but it is also enhancing the environment with an array of different varieties.
"Generations to come will be able to enjoy the trees as they grow and mature."
