AN animal rescue centre is hosting a unique sponsored walk to celebrate the lives of pets who have died.

Tiny Paws sanctuary near Guisborough is hoping to raise much needed funds to look after the influx of cats of dogs who are homeless as a result of the credit crunch.

A gentle walk suitable for ramblers of all ages and their dogs is planned for 1pm on Saturday, December 13.

Photographs of pets which have been loved and lost will be displayed in the Jet Miners pub in Great Broughton near Stokesley from where the walk will start and finish.

Jean Barraclough, Tiny Paws owner, said it was vital to raise cash to keep the rescue centre open.

"Some people don’t realise but it costs a lot of money to neuter, microchip and rehabilitate the animals and it never ends," she said.

"Christmas is a time to be with loved ones when people can feel sad when they think of the people or pets they have lost.

"The sponsored walk is a way for people to celebrate their animals’ life and help us care for others in the future."

Homes being repossessed and tenants forced to move into smaller rented properties due to the financial crisis has resulted in soaring numbers of animals which have landed on Miss Barraclough’s doorstep.

"Some genuinely well-meaning people find that after a life-changing experience they are simply unable to look after a pet and it is much better that it is given to a rescue centre than left to fend for itself," she added.
