A TOWN not known for its pistes is guaranteed to be covered with a blanket of snow this weekend.

More than 25 tonnes of artificial flakes are being transported to Middlesbrough to create a winter wonderland.

Skiiers and snowboarders will be demonstrating dare-devil tricks on the purpose-built slopes which will be erected in the centre of town.

Middlesbrough Council has invited SNO!zone to give the Teesside town an alpine feel with a delivery of white stuff from an indoor snow sports centre in Leeds.

Children over seven and adults under 6ft will be able to experience the thrills of "tubing" on a snow slide against the backdrop of djs playing live music between 1pm and 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The BBC big screen will be capturing some of the crowd experiences as well as featuring the extreme sports people.

Councillor David Budd, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: "This weekend will demonstrate, once again, how fortunate we are in Middlesbrough to have one of the largest and most popular public squares in Europe at the heart of our town centre.

"Now it is providing an amphitheatre for the kind of top class extreme skiers and snowboarders most of us only get the chance to see on television, and giving young and old the chance to join in the fun as well."
