CHILDREN are invited on board a festive trip to see Santa Claus in his grotto from now until Christmas Eve.

The Weardale Railway began running Santa Specials journeys at the weekend that go from their station at Wolsingham, in County Durham up to Stanhope.

Youngsters were entertained on board by elves and Morris dancers before their arrival at Stanhope where they were given a present from Santa and feasted on mince pies.

Gerry Mudd, a volunteer who helps run the service, said: “The feedback from the weekend has been great and the train was absolutely jam packed. The Morris dancers had to perform in the aisles.

“Our bookings are way up on last year and the children seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

To book call 01388-526203 or visit www.weardalerailway.org.uk.

Afternoon journeys are fully booked.

The morning train leaves Wolsingham at 9.30am. Adults and children over four are £10 and children three and under are £5.
