A GIANT jigsaw puzzle that represents a united community was solved at a special church service in south Durham today.
Residents of Shildon filled St John’s Church in the town this morning to complete the Putting the Pieces Together art project.
Using the environment as inspiration 30 community groups and organisations painted a piece of the 8ft by 4ft jigsaw. The project was run by green group the Shildon Mustard Seed Project and St John’s Church.
Helen Cole, community development worker for Shildon Mustard Seed, said: "It has been a fantastic project. Everyone who has taken part has worked extremely hard on their piece of the jigsaw and every single piece looks amazing.
"The support we have had has been overwhelming and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their efforts.
"The finished jigsaw shows that individual groups can do a brilliant job in their own right but when they work together they do achieve really fantastic things."
All 30 of the groups, which included Shildon Town Council and Shildon Residents’ Association, sponsored their piece for £10.
It can be seen in a number of venues across the town in January.
