CHILDREN in Willington are competing for the honour of switching on the Christmas Tree lights next week.

Willington Community Partnership is inviting under 11s to enter a Come Share the Light contest by filling in a short form at the Resource Centre before next Tuesday.

The switching on ceremony is on the Town Green at 6pm on Friday December 5 when there will be a short carol service with music from Aycliffe and Brancepeth Brass Band. More carols follow later at Lydia Street Methodist Church.

On Saturday December 6 the church has a Christmas Tree Festival with music and food from 10am to 4pm.

A Christmas Service starts at 10.30am on Sunday December 7 with a soup and sandwich lunch, jazz and carols from 12noon until 4pm and a closing celebration from 4 to 4.45pm.

The events are part of a weekend celebrating Hope 08 which has linked the partnership with the town’s three Christian churches to develop community initiatives.
