A CHARITY worker has set himself a gruelling challenge.

Jeff Breen, a regional manager for Diabetes UK, will take part in the inaugural Great North Swim next month to boost the charity’s coffers.

The 32-year-old from Fishburn sees the one mile open water swim in Lake Windermere on Saturday September 13 as a personal challenge and great way to support the charity’s work.

Mr Breen said: "Working for Diabetes UK has shown me just how serious the complications of diabetes can be and I want to try and help support people who have the condition by raising as much money as possible.

"I would like to encourage others to support Diabetes UK by also taking part in this unique challenge and helping us to raise the vital funds needed to continue research towards a cure."

There are nearly 22,000 people in the Durham area with diabetes and Diabetes UK supports people with the condition and their families and funds research into the condition.

Participants are advised to wear a wet suit and must be aged over 15.
