AN art student at Bishop Auckland College is fulfilling her dream by winning a university place ten years after she arrived in England from Latvia.

Karine Popova, 30, from Wolsingham, starts a motion graphics course at Northumbria University next month.

She joined the college two years ago after moving north from Brighton, enrolling on a national diploma in art and design, which is equivalent to three A levels.

She said: "I am delighted to be going to university. It has been my dream since I began painting and drawing five years ago.

"The staff and tutors at Bishop Auckland College supported me all the way."

Other students going on to higher education from the same course are: Faye Coates, 18, is studying graphic design at Teesside; Daniel Harris, 18, and Andrew Brown, 21, are both heading for the University of Cumbria where Daniel will follow a foundation course in games design and Andrew will take a BA in animation.
