A SWIMMING pool has taken on a new role - as a giant font.

The New Life Baptist Church in Northallerton has been using the pool at the Hambleton Leisure Centre for baptisms for the last ten years.

And more than 100 people came along to the latest service led by the Reverend Rodney Breckon.

Assistant pastors Steve Cowie and Vicky Thompson went into the water with him to carry out the baptisms itself while another assistant pastor, Barry Thompson, read a verse from the Bible for each of those being baptised.

The Rev Breckon explained: "Believers Baptism is a celebration of individuals finding faith and the fact it takes place in a public place echoes Biblical times, when it would have been held at the local river, However the local pool is much warmer and cleaner."
