Hundreds to pay respects to former bishop

4:16pm Tuesday 19th August 2008

HUNDREDS are expected to turn out on Friday for the funeral of a much-loved senior clergyman.

The former Bishop of Ripon, the Right Reverend David Young, died earlier this month at the age of 76. His funeral will take place at noon on Friday in Ripon Cathedral.

David Nigel de Lorentz Young became Bishop of Ripon in 1977 at the age of 46 and was for several years the youngest diocesan bishop in the Church of England. When he retired in 1999 he was the second longest serving bishop.

On his retirement he and his wife Jane moved to Lawkland, near Settle, in the Bradford diocese, where he served as an assistant bishop.

His body will lie in Settle Parish Church on August 21 for local people to pay their respects before being brought to Ripon Cathedral on Thursday evening.
