TWO imaginative worlds collide in a new exhibition that puts fun firmly back into art.
The lunatic machines of Heath Robinson and the fantasy land of fairies combine in works by the sculptor Samantha Bryan.
Collectively known as Brain’s Fairy Aiding Inventions, the sculptures feature a range of helmeted and goggled fairies using all manner of bizarre machines.
And they are going on display at Gallery in Kirkgate, Ripon, in an exhibition from August 22 to September 21.
Using a wide variety of found and recycled materials, including buttons, hand-dyed leather, paper, gauze and feathers, Samantha has let her imagination run riot to make the lives of her "fairies" easier.
"My extraordinary objective is to realise the necessities and requirements that would be involved in fairy life: to provide everything a fairy would demand during its daily existence," said Samantha, 29.
"My sculptures evoke a sense of nostalgia, escapism and make-believe necessary to remove the viewer temporarily from their worries."
Gallery owner Daniel Hornsey added: "Samantha’s work is wonderful – beautifully crafted, inspired and above all, fun."
Samantha’s work has gone on show alongside paintings by Richmond artist Ed Kluz and work by the Northern Potters’ Association.
