A WOMAN was airlifted to hospital after an accident in County Durham this morning.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called to the incident, at the corner of Bridge Street and Station Road in Howden-le-Wear, near Bishop Auckland at about 9.30am.

Police also attended the scene of the accident, which happened near to a block of flats in the town.

Local residents say they saw police and medics attending to a young girl before she was lifted into the helicopter on a stretcher. The helicopter left the scene at about 10.30am.

Details of the woman and her injuries have not yet been released.
