A MAN was arrested today following an armed siege lasting more than two hours.

Armed police and police dog handlers surrounded a house in Meadowfield near Durham City, after a man barricaded himself in when bailiffs arrived.

Inspector Eddie Bond said: "We were called to North View, Meadowfield, shortly after 10.30am where a man in his 40s had apparently barricaded himself in, before the arrival of bailiffs.

"The man who lives alone and was recently bereaved had apparently armed himself with a knife.

"Officers mounted a confinement operation around the house and a police negotiator was called to the scene."

Insp Bond added: "After more than two hours the man agreed to leave the house peacefully.

"He was arrested and taken to Durham City police station where he will be questioned before a decision is made on whether any action is to be taken."
