A WOMAN had to be cut free from a car and airlifted to hospital after she was involved in a head-on collision.

Saltburn Road in Brotton, east Cleveland, was closed for several hours this morning following the crash at 10.15am.

The accident happened when a man travelling from Saltburn to Brotton in a black Corsa drove around a right hand bend and collided with a Citroen Picasso coming in the opposite direction.

Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free the female passenger who was trapped inside the Citroen Picasso and she was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The male drivers of the Picasso and Corsa were taken to hospital by land ambulance.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "Although the female passenger's injuries are serious they are not believed to be life-threatening."

An emergency fire engine was sent from Coulby Newham together with one from Loftus and Skelton.

Buses had to be re-routed while fire crews swilled the road to remove leaked oil and debris.

Any witnesses to the incident who have not yet spoken to the police are urged to call PC Andy Overton on 01642-301552.
