A MOTORCYCLIST is seriously ill in hospital after he came off his bike while attempting to overtake a line of slow-moving traffic.

The incident happened on the A170, near Scawton Moor, between Thirsk and Helmsley, in North Yorkshire, at about 7.40pm last night.

He was taken to hospital in York, after suffering head injuries, and later transferred to Hull Royal Infirmary, where he remains in a serious condition.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "A motorcyclist, riding a yellow Honda motorcycle, travelling towards Helmsley, fell from his machine while overtaking a line of slower-moving vehicles.

"The line of traffic is believed to have been travelling behind a tractor or similar vehicle."

The road was closed for more than two hours last night, as an investigation into the cause of the incident was carried out.

Witnesses are asked to call traffic constable Dan Hughes, on 0845-60-60-247.
