A MOTORCYCLIST had to be airlifted to hospital this afternoon after colliding with a car outside a supermarket.
It is thought the incident happened as a car turned into the Morrisons petrol station at Morton Park, Darlington, at about 12.20pm.
The road was closed while police and ambulance crews dealt with the situation, and the man's situation was deemed serious enough for the Great North Air Ambulance to be called.
The helicopter initially had problems landing close enough to the scene, but it managed to land in the nearby McDonalds restaurant car park and the man could be taken onboard.
It is not thought anyone else suffered any serious injuries in the incident.
