Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa sold for undisclosed sum

4:57pm Wednesday 19th March 2008

THE sale of the prestigious Seaham Hall and Serenity Spa has been concluded today to The Samling to Von Essen Hotels for an undisclosed sum.

Seaham Hall, in County Durham, was originally bought in June 1997, by Tom Maxfield, former Sales Director of Sage plc.

Transformed from a derelict building into a luxury hotel that opened seven years ago, Seaham Hall is the only 5 star hotel in the North-East and the acclaimed White Room restaurant is the only restaurant in the region to have a Michelin star.

The Serenity Spa, designed by Jocelyn Maxfield, has won a string of international awards and has become one of the UK's top destination spas.

The Samling is one of the top luxury boutique hotels, overlooking lake Windermere in the Lake District, and a favourite amongst A-list celebrities including Tom Cruise.

Tom Maxfield commented: "After 11 years, Jocelyn and I have achieved everything we set out to. We wanted to create a hotel that would compete with the best that London has to offer and we wanted to create a spa that would rival the best in the world.

"We're very proud that our properties are regarded as a benchmark for excellent customer service and we're immensely grateful to our staff and management team, led by our Chief Executive, Debrah Dhugga, for helping us achieve our dream."

Andrew Davis, Chairman, von Essen hotels said; "I am delighted with the acquisition of these two very special hotels, our first in 2008, which will complement our existing Collection and expand the reach of von Essen into Northern England. Seaham Hall and The Samling are real treasures and we look forward to sharing them with our customers in the years to come."
