PROPOSALS for a park and ride scheme to cut traffic levels in Darlington are set to be shelved because its "potential use is limited".

Darlington Borough Council commissioned a report by transport consultants Atkins Highway two years ago to explore plans for the project.

The final report, which was presented to Darlington Transport Forum, will also be discussed by the council's cabinet next week.

Officers have recommended to cabinet that investigations into the scheme should be abandoned, at least temporarily, and reviewed again when funding decisions are made on new Tees Valley bus and rail systems.

The consultants had identified two sites where trial proposals could be run. They said either the Darlington Arena site, on the A66, of West Auckland Road, at the junction with the A68 and A1(M) could have been used as the parking areas.

Both sites could attract up to 300 passengers per day. They and four other sites were modelled by the consultants.

The feasibility study was commissioned to particularly cut congestion in West Auckland Road and North Road. Figures showed more than half of commuters journeys came from the north of the town.

However Simon Holdsworth, the council's transport policy manager, voiced caution to the scheme because users would be travelling onto different parts of the town.

The majority of trips are to employment sites, scattered on the outskirts of the town, to visit friends and to various leisure and education sites.

Mr Holdsworth said: "To be a successful park and ride, it has to be attractive as an alternative to the car.

"It is something that you would have if you have got traffic between two specific points.

"It is no good to serve a car-borne market going to lots of places."

Mr Holdsworth added potential use in Darlington would be limited.

The feasibility study also estimated that annual usage figures and annual costs would be significantly higher than the annual income.

A report, by Richard Alty, the assistant chief executive of regeneration, to be put before the cabinet, said: "The feasibility study shows that there is currently insufficient demand to develop a business case.

"Providing high quality public transport for inter urban trips may provide alternatives to the development of park and ride schemes."

Darlington Borough Council have failed many resdents of the Town.
Failure to take into account air quality in in areas like West Auckland Road Woodland Road North Road Yarm road is negligent. Has any monitoring been done?, if so what were the results.

The people of Darlington will continue to use cars to travel into the town centre and within the environs of the town, despite the efforts of the Borough Council to encourage the use of public transport, for several reasons. The use of public transport to take the average family into town and back is considerably higher than the price of two or three hours parking. On the occasions I have taken my two small children into town on the bus, I have been offended and intimidated by the offensive language used, at full volume, by other passengers, and was on one occasion, targeted by a drunken passenger at 10am. I can transport myself, my children and all my shopping in my own car without being ripped off, shouted at, forced to listen to foul language or jerked about by sudden braking when approaching a bus stop. Park and ride? No thanks.

In response to Lara, why do you think that a park & ride would be for Darlington residents? Why would someone living in the town drive OUT of town to then get a bus back in? A park and ride would be for the benefit of out of towners to prevent them having to drive into the centre - boosting trade and cutting congestion. The company I work for are supplying our car park as a park & ride for the Elton John gig on Saturday - perhaps other employers on the outskirts could think of doing this for shoppers on a weekend - saves council cash and surely would generate revenue for the town - just a thought!

AIR QUALITY in DARLINGTON been highlighted by Roger, this needs to be considered by DARLINGTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Has any measurment of AIR QUALITY been done in resedential areas of the town which are subject to continual high traffic flows.
In addition to those already mentioned Salters Lane, Haughton Road and Conniscliffe could be added.
POOR AIR QUALITY can have number ofdetrimental effects on Residents health, quality of life and their properties.

Go to the park and ride.Well let me tell you, I went into the park the other day, there were no rides, only the teapot lid for the kids. Even if there were some rides, how would that help with traffic congestion and air quality? Another waste of taxpayers money!

We use the park and ride in Durham City and think it's fabulous. We go into Durham much more often now that we know we can use this facility.

I think this idea is fabulous for Darlington. The town has grown so much lately that no matter what way you come into the town you've got a long drive into the centre, then the hassle of finding a car parking space.

I think if there was a park and ride it would bring a lot of extra trade into the town.

I do not see how a park and ride could work.
There are no bus lanes to whizz you in from Faverdale, Harrowgate Hill etc..

To J.H.Flywheel,

You are not in the slightest bit funny, or maybe you are considered so in some circles, I.T. conferences for example?

At the last I.T. ( Inertial Transmission) conference I was voted "Flywheel most likely to keep things turning" Indeed Sir, there have been Flywheels in Darlington since G. Stephenson built the Locomotion, there were Flywheels on the Titanic, our contribution to the industrial revolution is well recorded.

park and ride might be great for visitors, but in drham its a pain for people who want to go about their daily roUtine - Bus lanes here there and everywhere and not a bus in sight. They are active from 7am to 7pm and take up 50% of the road capacity and are used once every 20 mins by a bus with hardly anyone in. Most of the drivers in Durham dont read the signs, and avoid using the lanes outside the operational hours too! £9m that cold have been far better spent.
