AN ILLEGAL travellers' camp has appeared over the weekend.

Residents have voiced their concern over the camp, which runs alongside the river Skerne at Great Burdon in Darlington.

About 30 caravans have settled on the site, and up to 40 vehicles an hour are using a footpath for access to the field.

It is thought some of the travellers have remained in Darlington following the authorised Christian gathering which took place last week on Neasham Road.

A resident of nearby Chichester Walk, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "The travellers are using a footpath as access to the site and they are driving along it with no regard for anybody elses safety."

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said the authority was aware of the encampment.

She added: "It is not authorised and we are following our policy on dealing with unauthorised encampments. The eviction process has started."

The council's eviction process it thought to take about 10 days to complete.
