NOT one of the 37 post office branches in the region fighting closure plans has survived a cost-cutting cull, it has been revealed.

Post Office Limited has this morning announced its final decision on the future of branches in Cleveland, South Durham and Richmond.

All 37 of those earmarked for closure since February are to be shut despite protests in many communities during six weeks of public consultation which ended in March.

During the consultation period, Post Office bosses said they received around 2,590 responses and attended 22 meetings with customers and their representatives to understand their concerns and to ensure that all information provided by them formed part of the final decision regarding each affected branch.

The first closures are scheduled to take place towards the end of June and outreach outlets will replace Post Office branches at two locations.

Adrian Wales, Post Office Ltd's network development manager North East, said: "These are difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly. We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation. We believe that the plan announced today offers our customers in this area the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the Government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the Government has asked us to consider."

Another kick-in-the-teeth for this region.

Just like the sad Northern Rock events, decisions made elsewhere which leave the region reeling as if no-one cares, really, except us.
Little communities inconvenienced by local services being allowed to die, the regions biggest and most successful employer brought to it's knees by Government incompetence, thousands of staff being made redundant, and small long-standing shareholders' property 'seized' by a Government wanting to pass blame on to anyone but themselves - and then the absolute thousands of local pensioners being ripped-off in their shareholder compensation.

Meanwhile their company will be, before long, sold to the 'private sector' to make another profit for the Government, and they will get nothing from that either.

The impact of all of this (and the worse to come)is mainly in this, our region, not down amongst the leafy suburbs of the red-braces brigade.

'Shafted' (excuse me) once again by those, largely in the South - who probably think we are in Scotland in any case.

I am not political. Whoever is charged and trusted with representing this region in Parliament, each and every one, should get together, and, for once, get this region some fair consideration & treatment.
Stand up and be counted.

The Northern Rock Action Group are trying, on your behalf!

The decision to close all five Post Offices within the Borough of Darlington comes as a real blow to the thousands of local people who signed petitions and campaigned against these closures. These Post Offices were the hub of their local communities and a lifeline for many local people. Their closure shows that the Labour Government and its Post Office bosses do not care about local communities: they are only interested in big profits. It makes the current "People's Post Office" tv ad campaign sound very hollow indeed.

The closure of this Post Office will have a great effect on the local community and also the quality of life of older members of the community.
An absolute disgrace, what happened to the consultations, don't they have to justify this decision?

What amazes me is that every night you see an array of stars appear in the adverts to promote the post office, yet they shutting the product they are promoting. I wouldn't mind betting that the cost of that advertising campaign could of saved at least one Post Office for a year!!

I read on another website that the Post Office claimed no one would have go travel more than an extra mile to the nearest post office following the closures. I'm sorry but where is the closest post office to Toft Hill? I'm ok I can drive, but what about all the pensioners and young families without cars who live there and now have to go to either West Auckland or into Bishop Town Centre? Thats more than a mile and I certainly wouldnt like to try walking it in the middle of winter!

I think the closures are a discrace and agree entirely with Ali's comments about the celebrity advert...Westlife dont come cheap so stop wastinf money on TV and spend it where it matters!

This decision to close the Post Office branches in the area is yet another monumental nail in Labour's coffin, just as big as the 10p tax debacle. This decision is obviously based on a purely financial reasoning without any regard for the type of customer base each post office has. If that was not the case then how do the government explain the case for closing Simpsture Post Office at Newton Aycliffe which has a large elderly clientele because of it's location and is the only Post Office for at least a half mile radius. I know this because I lived in the area for 27yrs and still return as my elderly mother (81yr) uses the Post Office on a regular basis as no doubt do many of the other elderly residents in the area. Getting her to another Post Office will be nigh on impossible as she cannot get in and out of a car very well either. I cannot speak for the other branches as well as I can for Simpasture but I'm willing to bet a significant number of the other branches are in the same position!
What an utterly ridculous decision this is and it looks like Gordon Brown is destined to be one of the shortest serving Prime Minster's in history! I've been a Labour stalwart all my life but I'm afraid Mr Brown has managed lose my vote as he probably has with countless others!

As usual the Government hasn't listened to the people. What is needed in this Country is a revolution, and Civil War,but there are too many complacent folk who are too idle to get off their backsides.

What a surprise, this unpopular decision is made public shortly after the recent unitary elections - not before.

So I can't blame those who hoped they might be spared in the lead up to this election. I myself have first hand experience of just how this government operates.

They claimed Remploy factories were unsustainable and making massive losses. Something which was later proved to be totally wrong and in fact (guesstimates) for want of a better word.

The similarity with these remploy factories is uncanny. The Government claim that the Royal Mail is unprofitable. So whose fault is that?

Back in 1997 New Labour came to power and we all hoped things would change for the better.

I also remmeber attending meetings after that in 1997 when they talked of closing Post Offices then.

Its a policy descision dressed up, nothing less.

Since the people are massivly against the closing of their post ofices. The questions which should be thrown at their disciples should be just who benefits from this unpopular decision and why?

To be fair though, their are a small number of Labour Mps left who have not betrayed their principles of representing people.

But there are far too many who have displayed all the signs of doing just that over this scandalous decision.

It may be something to remember at tne next elections.

Another case of the current Government ignoring public opinion. Thankfully their days would now seem to be numbered. Never again must the people of this Country make the mistake of electing a Labour Government which is so hypocrytacil to believe that it is any way related to either the working person or the public in general. At least with Conservatives, Communists or whatever other political party you know where you are.

Now that the local elections are over we can now expect the next round of closures across the rest of County Durham. If our local "Labour" MPs want any support at all at the next General Ejection sorry Election they will need to really fight the Post Office and the Government on behalf of the people they are supposed to represent. Will they be prepared to do so? I really cannot see it happening.

Why can't the government see that not everything is about money? Why is it that they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing? As a diehard Tory voter I could never support such a callous programme of closures, which will bring real and unnecessary hardship to the lives of many.
If they want to save money why can't they sack a few thousand Town Hall employees - you know, the kind of incompetent cretins who overspent by two million pounds on the Darlington roads scheme, for example?
It is not that this government is simply out of touch: it was never in touch in the first place. It is a vicious, heartless regime and it is not fit to govern a decent society.

It beggers belive that a thriving post office is to close. This will be a verry large blow to the community.I myself can drive ,so it will incure a little discomfort to me , but for the elderly pensioners in this area it will be disaterouse for them
Why is the post office on the industrial estate to remain open ? or is that also planed for closure in the future.
The post office say they are loosing millions of pounds a week, they forget that since ebay and online shopping they are taking extra money not loosing money.
