Gurkhas’ demands
NEW Labour has shown again it is
not to be trusted. Gurkhas are
being denied citizenship of the
country they have faithfully
served.
Gurkhas who served after 1997
are allowed citizenship. Those up
to 1997 are not. What twisted mind
comes up with citizenship rules
like that?
I started my Army service
proper with 48 Gurkha BDE in
Hong Kong in 1959 and found the
Gurkha soldier to be pleasant, very
smart and always willing - an
example to others.
New Labour doesn't recognise
loyalty to Queen and country as a
quality for citizenship. Only if you
have lots of money to bring into
the country so you can buy
citizenship are you welcomed with
open arms. What a bottom of the
barrel lot New Labour are.
If our MPs had served our
country in the Armed Forces they
would understand the resentment
being felt by all ex-servicemen at
this blatant discrimination against
some of the most loyal and
trustworthy soldiers this country
has seen.

Or of course if you are an "EU citizen", giving you the right to live in any other member state, as per EC Directive 2004/38, which prevents us from deporting violent criminals back to other member states.
Personally I would put the rights of Ghurkas ahead of anyone who happens to be a citizen of another EU country, but our European government and provincial government in London don't see it that way.

Only a combination of two evils - New Labour and the EU could conjure up such a bizarre and twisted ruling. The sooner we dump the former and get out of the latter, the better for all of us.
My dear, long departed dad served with Gurkhas and often told me lurid tales about the use of the kukri, their famous fighting knife. He rated them as amongst the best troops in the Army. Now we treat them like muck.

It's an absolute disgrace. My great uncle was a Colonel of a Gurkha regiment in Burma. He'd be disgusted at the way they are being treated.

Dear Sir,
I just want to say at last Gordon Brown has finally recognised the Bevan Boys contributions. But is not time he opened his eyes further and stopped the shabby and disgusting treatment of the gurhkas?
I will go further, considering Labour open door policy to everything but smoking, is it not time they were given British residency as just about everyone else is!

Well said Peter,
I'm ex-RAF (80's - 90's) and without wishing to sound political, at least a fair number of Tory MP's have served, and their Association membership has a high proportion of ex-servicemen. With that in mind I might ask why nothing was done sooner and under a different government, but we are where we are.
The truth is that Labour and its pals across the left come out in a khaki rash at the very thought of military service...always been happy to send some other mugs though, like me and Peter no doubt.

Can someone remind me what the last government did for the Gurkhas? You would think this issue had suddenly appeared in the last few months and it hasn't. They have been treated disgracefully for many, many years.

The above post is correct, the sad truth is that this Labour government is the first one to give these rights to ANY Gurkhas, pre-1997 or otherwise. But it is clearly ridiculous to discriminate against the older Gurkhas. There is a rapidly growing petition to 10 Downing Street here: http://petitions.pm.
