AN idiotic driver was caught on camera smashing a speed limit with two children sticking their heads out of the windows.

Colin Goodall was snapped by a speed camera hurtling along at 101mph.

"This driver has endangered his own and other people's lives and I am sure seeing those children would have been a distraction to other motorists as well."

Lorna Jackson of pressure group Brake

But officers were horrified when they studied the footage and discovered the youngsters were not wearing seatbelts and were sticking their heads into the road.

Yesterday, Goodall was branded a "disgrace" by safety campaigners, as the 37-year-old was banned from the roads.

Jeremy Forsberg, of the Northumbria Safer Roads Initiative, said: "This is clearly absolutely disgusting behaviour.

"He is meant to be responsible for the children in the car, other road users and to himself not to drive in this manner.

"Breaking a speed limit by more than 30mph is bad enough, but to have young people not secured properly and dangling out of the window is shocking."

Goodall, of Harvey Close, Ashington, Northumberland, was speeding in his Audi car on the A189 Spine Road at Cramlington in October.

Because he was caught doing 101mph - more than 30mph over the speed limit - his case was automatically referred to court.

He appeared before Bedlington Magistrates, where he admitted the speeding charge and was given a 28 day ban.

He was also fined £200 and ordered to pay £45 in costs and a victim surcharge.

But it is Goodall's disregard for the safety of his child passengers that has angered safety campaigners.

Mr Forsberg added: "We know that hitting a windscreen at 30mph is the equivalent of falling off a three-story building.

"So, while travelling at 101mph, any sudden braking by the driver while children's heads are hanging out of the window like that would have severely tragic consequences.

"For those children not to be properly restrained in the first place is dangerous, particularly while going at such a speed.

"But to allow them to be behaving in the way they did shows a complete disrespect for the roads. He put his own life in danger, those of the children and other roads motorists.

"That should attract a harsh penalty and the driver was quite rightly banned by magistrates."

Lorna Jackson, of pressure group Brake, said: "Speeding with children hanging out the window is highly dangerous and irresponsible and to then only receive a one month ban really sends out the wrong message.

"This driver has endangered his own and other people's lives and I am sure seeing those children would have been a distraction to other motorists as well.

"This is wrong on so many levels and our stance is that if speeding or driving behaviour is that bad, it should attract a charge of at the very least careless driving."

28 day ban??!!!! The nutter should have been put behind bars, with his license revoked for a year or so. What a head case!

Also, if they are his kids, then social services really need to be looking at this man. Is he suitable to be raising children?

Idiot!

I agree with erm erm, no wonder the country is going from bad to worsse. What on earth was the judge thinking about. People get jailed for alot less ie none payment of fines etc and this man could of killed himself his kids and innocent people just going about their normal daily routine. I bet he is sat at home now laughing his socks off, he should be ashamed and he should lose his licence and be forced to take another test!!! And £245 to pay back in fines omg that is shocking!! Mr Goodall you must feel very proud of yourself, shame on you !!!

What Mr Goodall did was sickeningly stupid and showed a total disregard for lives of his children and other road users. But, this case is a prime example of why speed cameras are really useless. The camera only caught him in the act of speeding, took his picture and let him on his merry way to further endanger his children/himself/pub
lic. If he was actually seen by a police officer he would have been stopped straight away.

I find it absolutely staggering that people get away with this sort of behaviour, if anyone is caught driving like that then they should lose their licence forever, no more going on the roads for this kind of person, they are an absolute liability. It's not fair on the rest of us to have to witness / experience their bad behaviour.

As a safety officer myself for my company I am trained in how the law applies.

For example in how Common law is used in the courts to help reach judgements. As a consequence, I am absolutely appalled on may an occasion.

Apalled at the number of totally ludicrous judgements being made, which can then be later utilised by some members of our legal profession at a later date.

One can only assume that with New Labour being in power for over 10 years they could have easily predicted that prison places for an ever growing population would be in very short supply and sought to buld more prisons.

Surely this was a damned sight more important than bailing out Northern Rock?

Whilst this perpetual and apparently "weak on crime and weak on the causes of crime" judgements continue I do not hold out much hope while New labour are in control.

As there may well be an hidden agenda, as there usually is, to pander to those mistaken people who lobby that locking people up is not a punishment and alllowing them to go home etc is the way to go.

I totally agree 1000% with the other comments made about this particular case but just want to voice my own frustrations at the way this country is going.

i was absolutely amazed when i saw this on the news last night! something is very wrong with this man if he saw no problem with letting his own children hang out of the window and travelling at 101mph. i hope the mother of these children, is stopping this man seeing his children until he takes some parental lessons! i know i would be totally ashamed if they were my kids! a member of my family (many, many years ago) was jailed because he was driving a car when his friend started to lean out of the window and died as a result of a colision between the mans head and a lampost. the driver of this car could be attending his own childrens funural any day if he hadnt been stopped.

What they want to do to this ding-a-ling, is for someone to drive at 100 mph, with his head sticking out of the window, and keep it there until his face goes blue with cold, and his eyes start watering and he can't get his breathe, and he starts to choke and is panting for air, and at the last minute let him have his way, and then hopefully he has learnt his lesson on what a crank he is for letting his kids stick their heads out of car windows,at 100 mph, or give him a kick in the balls.

well aye lad, that comment was very cold and sadistic, but as woman i think we can do better than that. how about some very hot wax applied to the area's that matter most to him. apply wax strips, and then slow pull them away!? or cheese wire i'm sure will be very effective to teach him a lesson!! (i'm sure you are getting the idea!)in al seriousness tho, why arent the police appealing against the sentence it just was not enough, wat was the judge thinking??
