A POLICEMAN was injured in clashes with Manchester City fans, following the team's 8-1 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium today.

The officer, from Cleveland Police and who is in his early 40s, had to receive stitches for his wound, caused when he was struck by a seat thrown by a Manchester City supporter.

Violence erupted at the end of the match and seven Manchester fans were arrested. They are currently in holding cells at Middlesbrough Police station.

The injured policeman had his wound treated at the town's James Cook University Hospital.

was at the game , the police handling as always by clevland police was over the top, grown men hitting people with sticks.....should be ashamed of themselves, the police use the status to get away with being heavy handed , dont no how they sleep at night...........then will come out with some cover story like the above what a pity....what about the dozens of supporters who were batoned by the police

a man city 'supporter' pulled at 4ft long metal pole out of the pitch which alerted police who naturally feared for the safety of others. fairly simple really - keep off the pitch!

wots the point in u people blaming the police all the time they where not heavy handed besides ur police where there as well and no fans have been reported hurt but a copper in his 40s was hit in the face wif a seat along wif some others the police in manchester whould of done the same to stop people getting on the pitch and u lot shouldn't of made them use that force by rioting it's simple u don't flight our police willn't have to hit u wif batons.
