Co-op buys out convenience stores

SIX convenience stores across the region have been bought up by the Co-operative Group.

Five of the stores - currently trading as Bells Stores - are in Brookfield, Middlesbrough; Newton Hall, Durham; Wynyard, Billingham; Bassleton Court, Thornaby and Windlestone, near Chilton.

The other store, currently trading as Jacksons, is in Woodthorpe, York.

Within the next six weeks the Co-operative Group expect to take over the stores and begin converting them.

They will feature the Co-operatives new identity.

Regional chief officer David Mockford said: "This is a significant investment in the region for The Co-operative and we are looking forward to serving the local communities with the best modern convenience retailing and playing our part in community life in the best traditions of the Co-operative.

"The stores have great potential and with the benefits we will bring, including our member Share of Profits scheme, we would expect to add significant value to the businesses."

I wonder whether this news will be greeted with the same outrage as it would have been if Tesco had bought the stores.
