Axe Cole, Robson tells Fabio
SIR Bobby Robson is urging new
England manager Fabio Capello
to drop Ashley Cole as punishment
for his unacceptable behaviour
on the pitch for Chelsea
against Tottenham.
Coles tackle on Spurs defender
Alan Hutton in the 4-4 draw at
White Hart Lane last Wednesday
resulted in a yellow card and,
more controversially, an apparent
disregard by the England defender
for what referee Mike
Riley was telling him.
For former England coach
Robson, it was beyond the pale,
and he thinks Coles elimination
from this weeks friendly against
France would be a fair response.
Robson said: I would be
happy to see an England team
line up against France without
Ashley Cole.
It would hammer home the
message that what he did was
unacceptable.
Not being picked would be a
huge blow for Cole, and it would
show him and everyone else that
the manager is not allowing that
sort of behaviour.
Coles tackle was atrocious C
it was a red-card offence. But he
made things worse by arguing
with the referee. He then showed
a complete lack of respect by
turning his back on him. It was
disgraceful.
ö Aston Villa midfielder Gareth
Barry is convinced he and Owen
Hargreaves can play effectively
together in the same England
team.
Fabio Capello, in charge for
the second time against France
in Paris on Wednesday, is
renowned for operating with a 4-
2-3-1 formation incorporating
two defensive midfielders.
Barry has made that role his
own in the national side since returning
from the international
wilderness under previous England
boss Steve McClaren.
