WORKERS at supermarket chain Kwik Save, who have gone several days without pay, were last night assured the situation is a "temporary glitch" in the wake of its recent buy-out.

Scores of employees at the 30 Kwik Save stores across the region are understood not to have been paid for several days, ad many have contacted The Northern Echo.

One said: "I'm owed a few day's pay. We've not been given any real reason why this has happened. None of us know what's going on - only that we're owed money."

Last night, a spokeswoman for Kwik Save confirmed there had been a disruption in some wage payments after the completion of a £50m re-financing deal to rescue the business last month.

However, she denied the company continued to be in financial trouble, and said workers would be paid in the coming days.

The spokeswoman told The Northern Echo: "There has been a significant investment in the company and a change in management.

"As part of the whole changeover process, there has been a technical error with some workers' wages. We want to make clear it is only a temporary glitch.

"We are now working to ensure the affected people are paid as soon as possible."

Kwik Save was re-financed by a consortium of private investors on February 16, after its future was said to be "uncertain".

Its new chairman and chief executive, Paul Niklas, said he sees a big future for the chain and said announcements will be made in the coming months about his "new vision" for the company.
